On February 6, 2018, the City of Tarpon Springs will consider the purchase of the Sunbay Motel on West Tarpon Avevue. Its purchase is the first step in ridding the Spring Bayou area in Tarpon Springs of rampant drug related crime. Occupants of the motel have contributed significantly to this problem. The purchase price is approximately $950,000. After reading the information below, please check the bottom of the web page for updates and answers to questions. 

Following the Spring Bayou area's second murder in two years, the city tried to find a redevelopment solution without the need to purchase the motel. Those efforts failed, and time has run out. Drug related crime continues to worsen along with an influx of emboldened homeless persons who stop Spring Bayou visitors and residents on the street and knock on doors of nearby homes and on occupied car windows asking for money. There is no other way to ridding the Spring Bayou area of crime other than the city purchasing the Sunbay Motel.

After its purchase, there are at least two paths forward to eliminating crime. One is to purchase the vacant land adjacent to the motel and create a public event space as called for in the City Redevelopment Agency Plan. The Safford House, the home of one of the city's founders, could be relocated there for greater exposure to Tarpon Springs' history. In turn, this public investment will incentivize redevelopment of the Tarpon Inn across the street, also an incident prone motel. Another path forward is for the City to offer the Sunbay Motel property as an economic incentive for private development of both it and the adjacent vacant land.
