For everyone's sake, fix rideshare in California
Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft have become more and more difficult to find. I have been driving for these services since 2019 and have paid attention to people's complaints about the availability of drivers as the pay for the drivers has gone downhill, the pandemic started and gas prices have gone from around $3 to $5. Prop 22 created protection for drivers to keep these companies from taking advantage of drivers. However, it was designed before the pandemic and before the gas prices rose dramatically. For those drivers who do not have a hybrid or electric vehicle, the 30 cents per mile is problematic. If a driver is only getting 20mpg, that adds up to 25 cents per mile just for gas! After paying for the vehicle and maintenance costs, you are quickly going through far more than 30 cents. This leads to fewer people willing to drive, which affects EVERYONE. Not only are drivers that enjoy driving people around suffering financially, but this also increases the chances that people will drive while intoxicated, people are unable to arrive at their jobs on time and people that visit from out-of-state are unable to find rides. People are unable to get a taxi like they used to because the rideshare apps have decimated that business. The pandemic drastically impacted car rental companies, making it difficult for people to rent a car when needed. It would be nice if the companies noticed that it is a lose-lose-lose proposition to continue paying drivers well, but apparently, this has not been the case. It's not only better for drivers and riders to pay drivers appropriately, but it's also better for the rideshare companies as they will regain the trust of both drivers and riders and they will turn to their apps more often. Please update the Prop 22 requirements.
