A-League expansion in the 2017/18 season
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
This is a call to all football fans, players, coaches, volunteers and anybody associated with Football in Australia. It is time for a change!
On November 16, 2016 it was announced that Football Federation Australia is currently "developing plans" to expand the Hyundai A-League, an FFA spokesperson said. “FFA can confirm it has received a number of enquiries from consortia interested in FFA’s expansion plans for the Hyundai A-League".
“At this stage, FFA have advised any interested parties who have made contact that a framework for expansion will be completed early next year, which will allow them to submit expressions of interest in a framework which focuses on the viability of the proposed franchise and its ability to provide benefits to the A-League and the game.” (http://www.foxsports.com.au/football/a-league/aleague-expansion-plans-ffa-confirm-framework-will-be-set-for-bidding-expansion-franchises/news-story/3fd884f143a50e646bcd0b1b87d8cbc2
The FFA have since stepped away from these "developing plans" stating that, "the FFA’s analysis found that expanding the A-League by two teams under the current model would result in net losses over the next six years," the statement said.
"This is because grant distributions to the new clubs, and the increase in costs to FFA for operational matters such as transport would be greater than the additional revenue the clubs would generate through broadcast arrangements and sponsorship.
As stated by numerous commentators of football in Australia, this is this is not a good enough excuse. This is laziness and serious lack of ambition from the FFA, especially when we have a number of clubs across Australia who are willing to financially back themselves. Clubs such as, South Melbourne, Brisbane Strikers, Wollongong Wolves, and many more have the potential to be HUGE additions to the A-League. All of them have a big potential supporter base to tap into, they have a history in the game, and all are financially capable of sustaining themselves as professional football clubs. To deny these clubs, and any other clubs who have the financial capability, the opportunity to play professional football goes against the interests of the Australian football community.
As members of the football community in Australia:
1. We DON'T want to see the A-League remain stagnant;
2. We are NOT happy seeing the same teams play each other week in and week out;
3. We are TIRED of the lack of opportunity to play professional football in Australia;
4. We WANT Australian Football to grow; and
5. We WANT more football in Australia.
The FFA are out of touch with the expectations of the Australian Football community and it has reached a point where we are now DEMANDING the immediate expansion of the A-League!
