Food Delivery Services: Tell your restaurants to stop using one use plastic

Finally, across the UK, single use plastics are starting to gain the right attention. People who have been trying to encourage change for so long are starting to see improvements and important shifts in opinion. Thanks to the success of campaigners, television documentaries and recent news coverage, wasteful use of plastic is being called into question.

This attention has mostly been focused on larger companies and chains. Now it's time to look at smaller business.

Food delivery services like Just Eat, Hungry House, Deliveroo and Uber Eats are very popular, and connect a network of small businesses, many of which use excessive amounts of packaging in their food preparation. The majority of food delivery I've had in the last 2 years has arrived held in excessive amounts of plastic and styrofoam. I've often found some takeaways have sent my food in plastic boxes that have then been wrapped in multiple large sheets of paper.

I think it's time for these businesses to reflect on their choices and start using more recyclable and biodegradable packaging. It's time for them to reduce their plastic use considerably.

So I am asking Just Eat, Hungry House, Deliveroo and Uber Eats to encourage your registered restaurants to significantly reduce their use of plastic packaging and start using containers that are recyclable and biodegradable. I am aware that some of your restaurants use branded packaging that you supply, perhaps it's time to insist they all use this and then you can ensure total control of packaging materials and offer more eco-friendly and safer choices.

I ask that the people who care about this issue consider emailing these delivery services and individual takeaway  companies you use and asking them personally to consider using less plastic and wasteful packaging. You could also do this by contacting them through their social media accounts.
