Many people have fallen victim to the consequences of dangerous diet pills and other weight loss supplements. This happened to Sue Golder, a 51 year old hairdresser living in Hertfordshire. She was overweight and desperate to get down to a healthy weight. Searching for solutions, she came across these diet pills that had a doctor with a stethoscope around his neck in the advertisement. The doctor in the advertisement convinced her into thinking that these pills would be effective. After taking the pills for 3 weeks, she had a terrifying experience. A wave of sickness fell over her; her legs were shaking and she saw stars flying around. She thought she was going to die.

Turns out, the pills she had taken contained certain pharmaceuticals where the health risks outweighed the benefits. There are many more cases like Golder's where people have taken diet pills without the knowledge that they contained deadly dosages of pharmaceuticals not listed in the ingredients section. Many diet pills cause serious side effects such as dizziness, vomiting, heart trouble, and in some severe cases, death.

The FDA treats diet pills and other weight loss supplements like food, which means they are considered "safe until proven otherwise." However, I believe weight loss supplements need to be treated like drugs, which must be approved by the FDA before entering the market. Therefore, a policy needs to be implemented that requires the FDA to approve and regulate weight loss supplements in order to protect the safety of US citizens.
