Today, we live in a society where standards are set to please other people, hence most make it a point to follow the trend to belong to the community in which human aesthetics which includes physical appearance is considered as one of the most important aspect of a person as he or she should look presentable as well as beautiful. Thus, different methods were innovated and instigated in order to adhere to these so called standard such as cosmetics. Moreover, cosmetics is defined as the product applied to the body particularly the face to improve its appearance such as make-up. And due to the fact that applying cosmetics may be beneficial to an individual especially teenage girls nowadays, as it may help build rapport with other people, raise self-esteem and self-confidence when facing a mass of people, and ultimately, enhance their physical attributes, it becomes a necessity to society and the people to spend a lot of money just to buy either expensive or cheap forms of cosmetics. Hence, there is a possibility that health risks may develop when used exaggeratedly and irresponsibly, which may adversely affect the integumentary system since it is the external organ that ultimately protects and safeguards the human body.
Due to the high demand of cosmetics these days, numerous and various producers of cheap and expensive cosmetics ensure that their products remain attractive to the eyes of consumers. Consequently, influencing the people to purchase make-up, but then the extreme use of it can lead to skin and other erroneous health related problems which are:
1. Skin Diseases and Reactions
A permanent discoloration or severe damage to skin causing skin cancer may occur.
It may also affect and damage nose and nasal passage and result to eating difficulties.
3. Eye Infections
The use of mascara may also lead to blindness as it contains pseudomonas aeruginosa.
4. Nail Damage
Nail polish, manicures, and pedicures if done regularly may result to the loss of natural color and thickness of nail.
5. Cancer and other Chronic Diseases
For instance, some lipsticks contain aluminum which may cause long term anemia and even glucose intolerance. While, cosmetics like body moisturizers can cause trouble to endocrine system as well and disturb the thyroid content of body.
Even though, cosmetics are utilized to enhance the features of a person, it was proven that with prolonged use wrinkles and other signs of ageing may be visible. Thus, companies release anti-ageing creams or lotions which highlights the idea of capitalism in the industry.
7. Reproductive System Disorders
Cosmetic containing asbestos like talcum powder when in direct contact with organs can even affect the menstrual cycle leading to other imbalances. Other products may also cause vaginal infections or prostate and ovarian cancer in the future.
8. Hair Problems
Utilizing various hair products may lead to thinning of hair, redness in scalp, excessive dandruff, and also permanent discoloration of hair.
Therefore, it can be concluded that chemicals in cosmetics have possible disadvantages and effects to our body, hence it is important to always check the contents or labels of cosmetic products especially:
1. Skin Creams
According to the Food and Drug Administration, imported skin creams which intends to lighten skin may contain mercury that may lead to tremors, memory problems, changes in hearing and vision, and poisoning. Furthermore, this products are usually imported from China, India, or Mexico wherein the ingredient, mercury, may also be referred to as “mercurous chloride,” “calomel,” “mercuric,” or “mercurio."
Two consecutive tests were administered by the Food and Drug Administration detected that 100 percent of the lipsticks investigated contained lead which surprisingly came from brands such as L'Oreal, Revlon, Avon, Cover Girl, and even high-end brands like Dior and M.A.C.
Did you know that?
Bacteria can be transferred to the wand of the mascara. Although mascaras are considered to be safe for three months, bacteria that are naturally living in the eyes may be transported through application in the eyes.
Other chemicals that should be kept an eye on are 1,4-dioxane, acrylates, butylated compounds, benzophene and related compounds, carbon black, carcinogens, coal tar, ethanolamine compounds (MEA, DEA, TEA, and others), formaldehyde including preservatives, homosalate, hydroquinone, and many more.
Thus, it is imperative to keep in mind that we should always read the label just as we should in choosing the food that we intake. In addition, it is also best to use natural skin cleansers like raw honey, cucumbers, and raw egg yolk. But most importantly, we should remember to be wise in purchasing products since it is applied to our skin. We should not be pressured into buying something that is popular or expensive, since somebody said this and that rather we should remember that simplicity is beauty. The real you is the best person that you can be without the added products on your face. And bear in mind, that your safety is the utmost priority rather than trying to be someone you are not.
