Food and Drug Administration: Determine a %DV for sugar and mandate its inclusion on nutrition labels.

Food and Drug Administration: Determine a %DV for sugar and mandate its inclusion on nutrition labels.

The Issue

It is my understanding that the body requires no simple sugars on a daily basis. In Canada there is a recommendation that simple sugars be limited to 16 teaspoons per day. Though still excessive, having some form of recommendation for limiting sugars is at least a start. Leaving labels blank leaves a lot of people with the assumption that they can eat as much sugar as they want with no harm done.
Clearly, in a nation where diabetes is such an issue, we need all the help we can get to regulate our diets. The FDA should determine a % DV for simple sugars, or at the least a maximum daily intake recommendation, and mandate that it be included on all nutrition labels.
