Dairy cooperative Fonterra has announced it will close the cheese factory on Te Roto Drive in Paraparaumu, resulting in the loss of 65 local jobs.

Closing this factory means that no cheese carrying the internationally recognised and awarded Kāpiti brand will be produced in the very community that features on the label. For an organisation that purports to be a champion of provincial New Zealand, this simply isn't good enough.

In an age where the gate-to-plate story of the food we eat is becoming more powerful, with consumers around the world demanding to know about the provenance of their food, Fonterra should be investing in facilities like their Te Roto Drive factory to ensure their brand and product is truly authentic and building on its 35 year history with the Kāpiti Coast.

Fonterra and its CEO Miles Hurrell musto reverse their decision to close Te Roto Drive, and instead ensure that Kāpiti Cheese keeps being made on the Kāpiti Coast.
