Stela Gineva started this petition to Folkestone & Hythe District Council

At least 14 playgrounds in the Folkestone area could close under the council’s new play area strategy for 2020-2030.

The proposal, released by Folkestone and Hythe District Council, looks at investment into what it calls priority play areas over the next decade. Nine of these play areas are currently under the council’s ownership and another five are within the district but in other ownership.

However, of the 85 playgrounds in the district, 24 have been identified as ‘non-strategic’ and 14 of those are under the direct ownership or management of the council.

And if parish councils or community groups do not agree to an ‘asset transfer’ within a one year period, these 14 play areas could be reverted to open space.

Kent Live thinks this is a retrograde step - our children need and deserve somewhere close to home to play.

Today we call on members of Folkestone and Hythe District Council not to pull the plug on funding.

And we call on readers to join our Save Our Playgrounds campaign by signing our petition which we hope will demonstrate just how important these facilities are.

Kent Live editor Luke Jacobs said: "The idea 14 playgrounds could simply close is staggering.

"Not only do they provide an essential place for thousands of children to have fun and be active,  they are the places where our community comes together.

"It is no secret local authorities are facing a tough time, but  a council which doesn't put children's welfare at the heart of its agenda has got its priorities all wrong.

"Folkestone and Hythe District Council must see sense and take this disastrous idea off the table"
