Over the past 10 months, the county has seen firsthand the impacts of the BOS’ decision to underfund the schools against the advice of the School Board, Superintendent and residents. We understand the tough fiscal challenges facing Fluvanna. None-the-less, we believe proper funding of public education in Fluvanna is critical priority not only for the children of Fluvanna, but for the entire community.
You, the BOS, voiced concern that residents were not vocal during last year's process and were largely to blame for the decision. This year is different. We are informed and engaged. We come to you, our elected government officials, to represent the pressing needs of Fluvanna and to provide the necessary funding to show your commitment to Public Education in Fluvanna and to get the county moving back in the right direction.
We believe the School Board has made significant improvements not only in the transparency of their budgets, but also in identifying the full extent of efficiencies (cost cutting) that is possible without completely deteriorating our children’s education. This includes, but is not limited to the closing of Columbia and Cunningham, additional headcount reductions, restructuring of programs and many more.
However, those savings are still not sufficient to cover the school’s needs with the proposed draft budget allocation shared by Mr. Nichols. We urge the Board of Supervisors, through this petition, to heed the recommendations made by Mrs. Keller and the School Board in the February 20th working session and vote to provide at least the $14m in funding which Mrs. Keller outlined as the bare minimum the schools need to survive next fiscal year.
