Terri Wright started this petition to FLOYD COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AND PLANNING AND ZONING

There is an application to rezone the corner of 0 Melson Rd and 0 Fosters Mill Rd. (State Rd 100).  The current zoning is Suburban Residential with many homes that will be adversely effected by change to Heavy Commercial for use of metal fabrication.  The company is leaving the industrial park in Rome located less than 10 miles from this location at US 411 and Hwy 27.  There is no industry in this new location, only homes with a minimum requirement of 1 acre.  There is no public sewage system in this area, with everything being on a septic tank system leaving room for possible contamination.  Many of the homes have wells as their source of drinking water and the City of Cave Spring serves many communities with their  water.  There will be large semi trucks making steel deliveries for their metal fabrication and not only is this a dangerous curve with noted fatalities, but the county road cannot handle this change.  During Memorial Day weekend a semi truck blocked the road most of the day by getting stuck in the ditch.  If the trucks try to avoid this intersection, they would have to use Blacks Bluff where the county cannot keep the road from caving in over the lake as it is now.  Many of us moved here to live in the country, leaving the city behind.  We feel this type of industry needs to stay in an industrial park where it can be monitored by the EPA for air, ground water and storm water violations, and not placed in the middle of homes, especially since Rome does have an industrial park less than 10 miles from this location where this company originally resided.  The future Comprehensive Plan for Cave Spring for 2040 is to remain historic and residential.  This does not fall into that category.  If the zoning is changed, the use of the property could change at any time to anything falling under the category of Heavy Commercial and not be limited to metal fabrication.  There is a building on the property that was built in the 1970's (when there was no building code) which they plan to use but according to records submitted, this building has outlived its economic use.  The purchase of this property is contingent on the zoning change but the owners have never listed or tried to sell it at any time under current zoning of suburban residential. They are only wanting to sell to this particular buyer.  They have already allowed the purchaser to move into the building which is in violation of the current zoning and we are having difficulties getting the county to enforce this violation.  The habitat of this 60+ acres consists of several spring fed creeks which supports the wildlife consisting of beavers, ducks, quail, dove, fox, ground hogs, deer and most importantly, a BALD EAGLE.  There is currently a written petition and ask you not to sign this if you have already signed a hard copy.  What is happening here could happen to any part of Floyd County, so please support us since all of the County Commissioners represent all of us and not one district.  We desperately need physical support at the hearings with everyone wearing red; however, the dates continue to change. We will post the dates of hearings at the Cave Spring Library and in the window of the Sunoco Convenience Store when available.  Please help us by contacting the County Commissioners to stop this rezoning at 706-291-5111.
