The Floyd County Board of Education in Rome, Ga needs to make a change. The budget is low and many programs, such as our AP program, are being cut. A 2011 study by Education Commission of the States found that the average district that moved to a four-day school week saved between 0.4 percent and 2.5 percent of the total budget. Based on The Floyd County Board of Education’s 116.2 million dollar budget, we could save between 465,000$ and 2,905,000$. There would be no busses running, no heat, no air conditioning, less electricity, and no lunches during that day off. Not to mention, teacher salaries would not decline.

Advantages

1. There are fewer moments of wasted time.

2. Students can adjust to the new schedule.

3. It allows students to create an extracurricular schedule that works.

4. The 4-day school week follows the working schedule of many parents.

5. School districts can plan after-school events with greater ease.

6. Teacher recruitment is easier with a 4-day school week.

7. It is cheaper to run a 4-day school week for some school districts.

8. Students perform better when compared to the 5-day week.

9. The 4-day schedule reduces discipline issues for schools.

10. It improves the overall attendance rate for students.

11. Teachers take fewer sick days with a 4-day school week.
