Hannah Rodriguez started this petition to Florida Tech Admin

This petition is to urge the Florida Tech administration to reconsider having an in-person graduation ceremony.

“These graduates deserve more than anything the recognition and honor that comes with walking across the stage and graduating in front of their peers and loved ones,” - President Tracy Fitzsimmons of Shannendoah University.

President Fitzsimmons could not be more correct. This past year has been some of the most difficult times academically that students have ever faced. With so much having been taken from us, and with so long to plan, it is hard to understand how a graduation ceremony is off the table.

Other schools have the following policies:

- limiting gatherings to 250 students with limited guest tickets

- offering socially distanced seats 10 feet apart per family (at multiple venues or football stadiums)

- temp. screenings before entering

- up to 15 ceremonies over multiple days lasting 45 minutes to an hour

- Symptom checks 48-72 hours before commencement

These are policies that are being carried out at schools with many more students than FT, like UGA and Georgia Tech who both have over 25,000 students. I am not unsympathetic to the difficulties of doing this during a pandemic, but if we can figure out in a short time how to have a Drake Bell Concert set up to accommodate hundreds of students then the school should figure out a way to make this happen. We have the Clemente gym, Gleason Performing Art Center, the football stadium, and many more venues that could be a logical solutions if the admin reconsiders. For some people, this is a most special thing they will ever experience- perhaps being the first in their family to go to college, parents working for their degree, or whatever the case- and to accomplish that feat under the current circumstances deserves celebrating no matter how difficult to organize. I refuse to believe there is no solution to this problem, and I sincerely hope the FT admin will read this and reconsider.
