With the supposed increase of random shootings at colleges and universities, and in light of the recent mass shootings at schools and elsewhere, the ability to carry a legal concealed firearm onto college/university campuses is important for personal protection as well as the ability to possibly stop one of these terrible crimes. A licensed, trained, legal citizen carrying a firearm may prevent, stop, or end a mass shooting should they be able to carry their firearm on campus. By prohibiting this, the State may be responsible for someone being seriously injured or killed when they could have protected themselves or others.
Therefore we request the Florida Government remove the restriction in the Florida Concealed Firearm Carry Law (790.06 License to carry concealed weapon or firearm), specifically (12)(a) A license issued under this section does not authorize any person to openly carry a handgun or carry a concealed weapon or firearm into: 9. Any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms; & 13. Any college or university facility unless the licensee is a registered student, employee, or faculty member of such college or university and the weapon is a stun gun or nonlethal electric weapon or device designed solely for defensive purposes and the weapon does not fire a dart or projectile;.
We respectfully request that sections 9 & 13 be removed from the current State Statue so as to allow licensed concealed permit holders to protect themselves and others if needed.
