On the afternoon of September 6, 2012 my 15 year old son, along with two of his friends, both 16yo, were killed in a car accident. It was a house rule that our son would not be allowed to ride with any of his friends without an adult in the car. On this day we made an exception. Our son and his friends were supposed to go less than one mile round-trip, from the High School to his friend's house, and back to the High School to a volleyball game. They were diverted when another friend called and asked for a ride. They never made it home. Some time during the drive, my son got behind the wheel and lost control of the car, crashing into a tree, killing him and his friend in the front passenger seat instantly, with his other friend in the back seat dying on the way to the hospital. All three boys were wearing their seatbelt! Florida is only 1 of 6 states NOT having passenger restriction laws for newly licensed teen drivers. 44 states in the US have these laws. This petition has been started in hopes that Florida lawmakers will pass a law restricting the number of teen passengers in the vehicle with a newly licensed teen driver. Teenagers need more time to familiarize themselves with a vehicle and road conditions and we, as parents feel that this law may help with that! Please help us save a teen's life and have no other parent go through what we have gone through. If one teen's life is saved this law is worth it.
