Confirmed victory
Petitioning Florida Hospital (FHHS), Adventist Health System

Sign a single-case contract with Dr. Sugarbaker/Washington Hospital Center

My name is Holly Freuler. I am a 33 year old married mother of 2. I have a very rare form of an unusual disease: Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma. Only 130 cases have been reported worldwide.

No doctor within my insurance network has ever treated a case like this before...in addition no doctor performs the surgery necessary to save my life: Cytoreductive Surgery with HIPEC (open perfusion). Since there is no in-network expert, I think Florida Hospital/Adventist Health should pay for my treatment at the in-network rate.

Cytoreductive surgery with Hyperthermic Peritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is the standard treatment for my disease. There is NO alternative curative treatment. It is approved by the FDA and my surgeon has a 90% survival rate at 5 years (well above the rest).

A FHHS representative stated on the phone last week, "Why would you want to go all the way up to Washington D.C. to have a surgery?" The answer is simple: I don't, but if I want to see my children grow up, this is what I need to do. It would be quite convenient to not travel over 800 miles, have a surgery in a hospital I am not familiar with, to readily have family and friends close by to keep me company, etc. I wish I had something that any doctor could treat. Unfortunately, that's not the case, which is why I must push for the National expert to treat my cancer.

Letter to
Florida Hospital (FHHS), Adventist Health System
I urge Florida Hospital Healthcare System (FHHS), part of Florida Hospital and Adventist Health to sign a single case contract with Dr. Paul Sugarbaker of Washington Hospital Center. There is no expert in my insurance network; therefore I should only have to pay the in-network rate.

Florida Hospital is one of the best hospitals in the world who employs the best staff. I know this because I am a staff member myself. However, being the best also means knowing when you cannot give a patient what they need, and allowing them to seek treatment where it is given.

Respectfully,

Holly Freuler
