Nothing about this year has been ‘standard’ so why make kids go through rigorous and stressful standardized testing? This year has been very hard for a lot of kids, and instead of finding a better alternative for these assessments or giving families the opportunity to opt out, the State Education Commissioner decided to sign an order requiring these tests.

According to the order, these tests are important because children are falling behind. But what will this accomplish? If kids are falling behind isn’t it already obvious that they would not do well if they were forced to take a standardized test? This order is in bad taste; not only will students have to take standardized tests for the first time since the 2018-2019 school year, but they could put their families at risk by attending school to take the tests in person. 

“This is not what school is.” Says Anna Fusco, teachers union president.
