Throughout the southeastern United States, eastern diamondback populations are in steep decline for a number of reasons. I believe adding this species to a protected list for the state of Florida will help preserve what remains of the worlds largest rattlesnake for generations to come.

The most destructive factor that is contributing to the decimation of the eastern diamondback is habitat destruction. Long-leaf pine forests are considered to be the eastern diamondbacks preferred habitat. Today in Florida only 2-3 percent of these habits remain untouched by development.
Protected species present on land to be developed, can delay or completely shut down the development process for the specific area.

Human persecution is the next thing that takes a huge toll on the eastern diamondback.
I believe this is where protecting this species will have the greatest impact, simply because senseless killing of this species can be defended with legal action.

In my hometown the eastern diamondback used to thrive, these days all that remains are the stories from old time locals & a very slim population. At this point we should do what we can to protect what remains before it’s lost forever.
