COVID-19 has affected the year of 2020 in many different ways. One commonplace routine that has been affected for the worse is schooling. In order to curb the spread of COVID-19, schools all across the globe have shut down physically, and have turned to online teaching and learning. Distance learning is something everyone involved was unprepared for. It is usually carefully thought out with some face to face instruction and some independent activities. But the ones who suffer the most in this rushed, thrown together situation are the students. The structure of brick and mortar school is how many students manage their time. They had 45 minutes a day to be instructed, to practice what they learned in that subject, then move on to the next subject. This gave their brains time to digest the content that they were learning. With no set schedule and no teacher to show up and peers to collectively learn with (learning is a social activity), many students are floundering. It is about time someone says enough. Students' GPAs are suffering. The stress this could be causing students, the stresses of everyday life in quarantine, the stresses of living in instability for many, and much more is a leading factor as to why this was made. Students are following the instructions of their teachers, but most teachers aren’t realizing how swamped their students are becoming due to the amounts of work being given. As an adult in this situation with a student who is struggling to adjust to the reality of this new teaching method, I make this petition to base fourth quarter grades off of the three semesters that came prior to the disruption of normalcy. Void the fourth quarter. It is not the time for heavy content. It is time to help students become accustomed to this new learning environment. Take the large weight a number of students are carrying on their shoulders right now and give the students of the sunshine state a break they rightfully deserve right now. Void the fourth quarter.
