Mandating the use of Environmentally Friendly Fertilizers
In Florida, an average of 1.9 million tons of fertilizer are used by companies across the state annually. When these fertilizers run off of crops on farms, many of them culminate in water sources such as Florida's springs. Residing in the springs allows the fertilizer to feed and give nutrients to algae, thus allowing it to take over the spring.
Statistics from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services report that farming accounted for 82% of the nitrogen, phosphate, and potash fertilizer usage. These fertilizer ingredients, especially nitrogen, are the ingredients responsible for generating pollution in Florida's springs.
We, the citizens of the State of Florida, demand that our natural water sources be both protected and preserved. Mandating the use of Environmentally Friendly Fertilizers for all agricultural production will make this possible.
