I grew up with citrus trees all my life here in South Florida. Nearly 12 years ago, the Florida Department of Agriculture came and destroyed ALL of my father's citrus trees - more than 4,100. My father, who is now almost 80 years old, helplessly watched as these trees were seized and destroyed - right in front of his eyes. The Department claimed these trees were destroyed because of citrus canker, but a few years later, they ended their program of destroying such trees altogether. Private homeowners and BIG citrus grove owners were all compensated by the Department - but what about my dad? He has been fighting the Department for more than 10 years - trying to get fair and reasonable compensation for these trees - without success. He is now nearly bankrupt in this fight. As his son, I cannot imagine that he will NEVER see a penny for his beautiful trees in his lifetime. He worked for nearly 50 years with citrus trees and my 4 siblings and I enjoyed them for 4 decades, growing up in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s - until they were taken and destroyed in the year 2000.
