Let students wear headscarves and other religious attire to all FSHA events/ceremonies

Today I received disturbing news that the high school I went to,  Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, prohibited Muslim students from wearing headscarves during the school's yearly Grandparent's Day celebration on Tuesday. The day before FSHA had allowed headscarves to be worn, but after receiving complaints from parents the administration thought it would be best to have the students not cause "a distraction" while the Grandparents (also known as donors) were there. According to my sources, multiple faculty members at FSHA requested meetings with the administration but so far none have occurred.

If this is all true, this is not only disgustingly Xenophobic but also extremely hypocritical. FSHA prides itself on following the "Dominican pillars of truth and integrity," and yet at the threat of losing a profit, those pillars fall. Their website says "we welcome everyone with open arms" but misses the disclaimer of "only if you come with money." But the worst part of all this is that from what I understand the ban was ONLY FOR WHEN DONORS WERE ON CAMPUS, showing that the school knows how unjust and blatantly racist it is.

I have always said that FSHA was worth the cost for the education it gave me and I am eternally grateful to the teachers I had. But to stand silently while this goes on is a disservice to those teachers, my parents who sacrificed for me to be where I am today, to myself who always fights against inequality, and to our society as a whole.

I, along with other alumna, are requesting 2 things:

1 - a public apology and explanation from the FSHA administration for their headscarf ban

2- for an amendment to be added to the handbook stating that headscarves as well as other religious attire be allowed at all FSHA ceremonies and events going forward.

Until our demands are met we will be withholding donations. We are also willing to go to the press if this is not resolved within the week.
