Governor Rick Scott,

It appears to me that the Task Force on Citizens Safety and
Protection is apathetic toward the needs of the community. I would like to
bring to your attention my disappointment with the newly formed committee in
regards to 3 key issues:

1) How officials get appointed to
the Task Force
2) The Task Force’s choice in venue
and how they announce their meetings
3) Their lack of involvement with
community youth

First, as it stands now, there is no house
representative or senator from the Miami Gardens area that is on the Task
Force. This does not properly reflect
the community in which we live. Therefore, appointing some of our elected officials would be more
Second, I would like to see that all meetings are
fairly and properly publicized to the public and in a central location. For example, “The Stand Your Ground” website did not
include in its agenda that the Task Force would be addressing its opinions on the
Stand Your Ground law. I feel that if this information had been included, more
residents and organizations would have been aware and possibly more would have attended. I also know that more people
would have been in attendance if the meeting had been held in a central
location. For
example, the Sept. 12th meeting was held in West Palm Beach, FL at
3311 Gun Club Road. However, the next day the meeting was held in Miami in
Cutler Bay which is 40 miles away from Miami Gardens. If the Task Force properly reflected the thoughts and opinions of the
community, these mistakes might not have happened in the first place.
Third, our youth needs a stronger avenue
to communicate their needs to city officials. The more we get the youth
involved now, the better their chances of coping with the decisions made by the
Task Force.I believe that a Task Force -- made up of
local senators, house representatives and other community residents -- should
reflect and serve the children, adults and families who make the community. I
myself would love to serve the Task Force to ensure these voices are being
heard. However, the young members of our community are not receiving enough
opportunity for their positive involvement.

A viable solution would be to have another meeting here in Miami in a central location, such as Miami Gardens or Downtown Miami, that would include the participation of Miami's youth.
