I want to solve once and for all the decades long disaster that is our kingfish wild stocks.

We have such a small percentage of breeding size kingfish in our waters and it’s been this way for many years.

I believe the issue is the law, as it stands we can take 5 fish per person with a minimum size of 650mm and people have been and continue to decimate (commercial and recreational fishers) the population by keeping fish that have not had even a single chance at reproducing.

Fisheries studies show in NSW waters that female kingfish are not sexually mature until approximately 830mm (to the fork I believe)

Im saying these laws with the current scientific studies we have are outdated and simply wrong.

I propose a protection law that bans the keeping of kingfish of any size (at least for recreational sector) for a period of 5 years, then re-assess and consider lifting the ban at the same time as introducing increased minimum length limits to 85cm to the fork to ensure at least one opportunity at a successful spawn.

There’s no reason we can’t have a healthy population like across in NZ, we just need to stop wiping them out before they have a chance to reproduce.

5 years is a small sacrifice for what I think amazing results would be the outcome so please if you care, please sign petition and I will Work out who to forward it too if it gets enough signatures.
