Hello, my name is Amanda Gaskins. My son is an inmate in the Georgia prison system. I never knew how bad these prison systems are until my son became and inmate. Most of you are unaware of the violent crimes that are happening today behind the walls. Gangs have taken over our prisons and are raping, beating, killing and more due to the lack of people who care and the mixture of offenders in these prisons. So many people in there with non-violent crimes are killed and severely beaten and far too many times are left for dead or beaten more because they are afraid to reach out. My son who is a non-violent offender and a short timer as well was housed with nothing but gang members and convicted murderers. These gang members have a life sentence with nothing to lose if they murder or beat other inmates. My son was recently a victim of a gang beat down and was also stabbed.  This has got to stop. There are enough prisons in the state of Georgia that these inmates can be housed according to their crimes. A non-violent offender should not be housed with murderers or other violent offenders. Murderers should not be housed in level two prisons unless they have been in prison for the most part of their sentence and considered rehabilitated by the parole board. No violent DR's or history of it while incarcerated. People with man slaughter charges should be allowed to be housed at level two. Child molesters and rapist should be housed separately as well. If they would do this perhaps it may bring down some of the violence and deaths of the short timers and non-violent offenders. Please sign and share my petition to make this change.
