Bethany Carlton started this petition to First Merchants Bank and

Today I was informed that First Merchants has decided to shut down our Morristown branch. They are moving all of Morristown's staff to the branch on 44 in Shelbyville. As a former employee, I can assure you that Morristown has always been a profitable branch. They hit their goals and they grow business for the bank on a normal basis. From a business standpoint, they bring endless good PR and customer service to the First Merchants name.

The leadership and community involvement by Jess Brown (manager) and her staff is unparalleled by any other local bank. They have served as a local drop off center for the community on several occasions. In the past they have hosted donation drives for the USO, back to school supplies, food drives, bottled water drives, and several other local fundraising events. They host a community fun week to get people in the spirit of Derby Days (the local cub scout derby races) each July during which they serve lunch to over 300 locals. They collect letters to Santa in December, and Santa responds to every letter along with a package of reindeer food. The staff stays after hours every year in November in order to prepare and deliver a full Thanksgiving meal for the elderly families who live next door to the branch. The staff at that branch fully submerge themselves in the community they serve. At times they have served as board members and leaders of local non-profit organizations and volunteer hours of their personal time to community events. If you are a member of the Morristown community and can honestly say that our hometown bank hasn't made an impact on your life in some way, then you haven't been paying attention. Whether you personally bank with First Merchants or not, I can assure you that your life has been touched by those girls at some point.

The First Merchants website states, "We are focused on building deep, lifelong client relationships and providing maximum shareholder value. We provide an environment where customers can bank with their neighbors, realizing that our business begins and ends with people." That statement is the epitome of the Morristown branch. Yet First Merchants has now single handedly taken both of the banks in our town and moved them to bigger cities. I don't know about you, but my neighbors don't live 20+ minutes away in Shelbyville. They live in Morristown, Fountaintown and Gwynneville.

The circumstances around this announcement are unsettling. The staff was just as blindsided with this news as we are. In a time when local businesses are already struggling to stay afloat due to COVID-19, First Merchants has decided to pull the one and only bank out of our beloved community. This will cause many of our local businesses and community members a major hardship. It will cause our community as a whole a hardship. I, for one, refuse to sit down and shut up about this. I encourage all of you to take a stand with me. THIS IS OUR BANK!
