I’m sure everyone is aware about the situation that happened in Hwa Chong where a school counsellor gave a presentation on sexuality containing very discriminatory content and also data used in those slides were not scientifically proven. This unscientific and anti-LGBTQ message was presented during a Secondary 4 assembly, where students are primarily 16 years old.

A video from a Christian Organisation TrueLove.Is (a known perpetrator of “conversion therapy” practices) had been shown to showcase how someone has successfully suppressed his sexuality through “conversion therapy”. 

As much as HCI claims to have no involvement in the sharing it was conducted by an official staff member during and official school programme. It is unclear if the school is taking meaningful actions especially after they SUSPENDED the staff from Sex Ed when we should be firing them as a whole as we will not be sure of how they will be counselling and handling students who are a part of the LGBTQ community. We are not sure what kinds of hateful “ counselling “ he has given to queer students in HCI during his private sessions. 

After the suspension, simply from Sex Ed we are not sure if the school will check his standards and make sure he did not harass any LGBTQ student within the school. 

Hence, the staff member should be fired instead of being suspended from sharing on sexual education. We are to protect our students and especially our queer students during this time and give them a safe space such as schools to be themselves and share their struggles in a safe space.
