Why this petition matters
Started by Nessa Dennington
Bill HB 1925 was implemented in Texas September 1, 2021 and it specifically harms homeless individuals. It is now a criminal offense to camp in a public space, punishable by an up to $500 fine and a class C misdemeanor.
The criminalization of the homeless community is not an effective intervention and only serves to make it harder for an individual to become stable.
There are at least 25,000 homeless people in Texas who will be affected by this bill. Securing temporary housing and assistance is not an easy feat, and often requires waiting on a list to be served.
Why are penalizing people who don’t have the privilege of having a place to call home?
This bill is harmful and marginalizes an already marginalized population.
