Hello, my name is Manzini. I am 20 years old and I just became a mother 2 months ago. I got my first job at 16 and have had a number of them by now. I've gone from fast food to labor work to an office I currently work at now. I love my job but I can never help but notice even that one person who discriminates against me for being younger. I've spoken to several friends and family about my experiences and have been told many stories as well about age discrimination just for being younger. I've experienced things like being "scolded" for things I do or don't do in my personal life by older employees who don't necessarily like me, I've had older employees continuously stare at me while I eat on my break, I've had older employees treat me like I'm stupid and interfere with simple things like taking a phone call and trying to yell over me the whole time, I've had older employees try to take over my projects even though they're busy and I'm not. I worked at a Mcdonalds when I was still in high school and I remember quitting along with my younger sister because our manager pulled us aside and said things like "I don't have to deal with your high school bullshit", "You both look atrocious (referring to our colored hair at the time and how we did our makeup)". I've had older employees say snarky things and rude things about what I'm eating, a lot of the times I'll be talking to another employee about my personal life and have them butt in and judge what I'm talking about and tell me everything I know is wrong. The point is this is not something new and it is still going on today. The government protects those over 40, but those under 40 are not considered. We are still growing and learning, we are still human and we still deserve a chance. Everyone around us wants us to be successful adults but doesn't believe in treating us like them. No matter our age or knowledge we deserve respect, we deserve a work space where we don't have to worry about being discriminated against because we are still learning and trying our best. We deserve a workspace where we can grow and learn while still being treated like a respected adult. It is time to put a stop to this and not be afraid to stand up for ourselves for fear of not being listened to.
