On May 21st 2015, the Israeli military detained the Palestinian National Football Team at the only international crossing available to Palestinians in the West Bank. The Palestinian players were detained for hours on their way to prepare for upcoming official matches in Tunisia. This violation occurred 24 hours after the president of FIFA, Mr. Sepp Blatter, left Israel in what was an attempt to guarantee Palestinian players’ rights to movement and equipment.
This is far from an isolated event. The Palestinian football team has faced immobility, limited sports equipment, harassment, interrogation and imprisonment by the Israeli government. FIFA has recognized some Israeli violations and therefore, has elected a task force aimed to facilitate the Palestinians’ right to movement and equipment. However, the enforcement of these unalienable rights depends on the cooperation of the Israeli military, which evidently, has been lacking.
In response to South African apartheid, FIFA suspended the South African teams’ rights to compete internationally for 28 years. This made a profound impact on the international community and spread awareness regarding the country’s racist policies. FIFA must hold Israel to the same standards and allow the Palestinian National Football Team the right to compete and train.
