Relieve Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson of Duty

Ronda Salazar started this petition to Senator Claire McCaskill and

I have been a resident of St. Louis for more than 15 years. Unfortunately, I have several friends in the area who have been targets of police profiling throughout the years, simply because of the color of their skin. Recently, my friend (who is black) and I were pulled over in a local neighborhood by the St. Louis County Police. We were just heading to a friend’s house, but the officer felt it was reasonable to pat down my friend and search the car. After being unnecessarily detained for 30 minutes, the officer finally let us go, telling my friend that he was lucky there weren't any warrants out for his arrest.

This is something that I believe takes place regularly in our community. It has been a serious issue within the various municipalities of St. Louis City, St. Louis County and the surrounding areas for decades. I believe that the recent Michael Brown shooting incident is just the latest one of many terrible examples of police profiling in this area. Many people here are disgusted, and they’re looking for answers. They’re looking for justice, and they know our community will have to make changes in order to get through this troubling time. After all of this turmoil, how can we trust the local police leadership?

It’s clear to me that we need a change in leadership in order to move properly forward. We have seen Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson’s failure of leadership time and time again with the nation’s eyes on our community. As a result, I believe that Chief Jackson should resign effective immediately so that new leadership can begin to work to restore the confidence and trust that is so desperately needed within our community.

There are many reasons why I want Chief Jackson to be relieved of duty:

Chief Jackson’s police force allowed Michael Brown’s body to lay face down, uncovered, in the street for hours after his death.

* Chief Jackson ordered unnecessary, militarized police tactics immediately following the shooting of Michael Brown in response to largely peaceful protesters.

* Chief Jackson released irrelevant information regarding an alleged "robbery" involving Michael Brown. I thought this was an obvious diversion tactic to smear Michael Brown's name.

* Chief Jackson did not release the name of the officer involved in the shooting until six days after the incident had taken place. It’s likely that any other "persons of interest" citizens would have had their names immediately released.

* Chief Jackson lied about why he released the alleged Michael Brown robbery tape. He claimed it was in response to too many people requesting for the video via Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.

This is not what can we can expect from someone whose job is to help lead a police force that is supposed to serve and protect. Right now, he’s doing more to protect his police force than he is to serve the community. Based on Chief Jackson's behavior, I do not have any confidence that he will not continue to show bias in his job moving forward. I am requesting that city officials immediately relieve him of duty and recuse him from this shooting investigation.

In a recent update from several sources, it appears that Attorney General Eric Holder has confirmed that there will be a Department of Justice investigation into the Ferguson police department.  In spite of this investigation, we have a right and a responsibility as citizens of this great United States of America, to make our voices heard regarding how we feel about Chief of Police Jackson.

Please review this petition and sign it if you think Chief Jackson should be forced to step down. Change must happen from the grassroots level, and our voices must be heard in order to make this happen!
