“Yeo-hyeom,” or hatred or discrimination against women. “Nam-hyeom,” hatred or discrimination against men. There is an endless tug of war between women and men in South Korea--ironically, for equality. As far back as its timeline goes, South Korea today is undoubtedly founded upon rich cultural traditions and historical trails. Unfortunately, patriarchy and its notions are deeply embedded in the history, culture, religion, and society, and they continue their legacy to this day. To look the bright side, South Korea still has made an immense improvement, going as far as the government establishing The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family in January of 2001. However, the Ministry’s forced assertion of erroneous, misleading idea of so-called feminism not only promotes gender inequality and further excludes women as feeble and helpless members of the society, but it also amplifies the divide between genders even further.
