I, Nirav Anney, a 11th grader from Mumbai, wish to spread awareness regarding Organ Donation among my fellow Indians. PLEASE GIVE TOP PRIORITY TO THIS PETITION AND COME FORWARD TODAY TO PLEDGE TO SAVE A PRECIOUS LIFE BY SPREADING AWARENESS AMONGST OUR FELLOW CITIZENS. WHO KNOWS, IT COULD WELL BE YOURS THAT IS BEING SAVED ONE DAY. YOUR NOBLE ACT OF KINDNESS TODAY WILL LIVE ON FOR SEVERAL TOMORROWS.

Finding a donor is an uphill task in India and is further complicated by bureaucratic red tapism. Lack of awareness and apathy among our fellow Indians makes a bad situation worse.

Challenges in India:
1. A cadaver donor is typically on life support system and appears to be sleeping and warm to the touch. This makes it difficult to convince family members to donate organs of their brain dead relative.
2. Many families refuse to donate an organ on a new moon day(Amavasya) as it is considered inauspicious. If a day is wasted in this manner, the organ in question can become medically useless.
3. Incentivising the donors is not allowed by Indian Law.
4. Many prospective organ donors in India who may be sick may want to donate their organs. They do so because they are cash strapped but they do grave harm to themselves.
5. Difficulty in obtaining donors leads to desperation among patients and their families, which in turn can lead to illegal trading of organs. This unfortunately, is a growing threat in our country.
6.We have woefully few transplant surgeons, trained critical care personnel as well as hospitals that are equipped for transplants.
7.Miscellaneous:
Apathy among the masses for organ donation
A general reluctance to discuss organ donation
Professional ignorance
Fear of litigation
Poor communication
How can the challenges of organ donation be addressed?
1. Aggressive awareness campaigning should be carried out to battle the tremendous lack of awareness and myths surrounding organ donation.
2. The Government should look at amending some laws and giving benefits to genuine organ donors.

What is the awareness that will be created by signing the petition?

1. Each day, 250 lives are lost due to lack of donors.
2. Over 1 million people in India suffer from end stage organ disease and need donated organs in order to survive.
3. One organ donor can typically save 8 lives! The same donor can also save and improve the lives of upto 50 people by donating tissues and eyes.
4. Our nation has an estimated 0.7 million blind people. If arrangements are made for the dead to donate their eyes, it is possible, within a short span of 11 days, for the visually impaired to be able to see!

MERELY SIGNING THIS PETITION AND FORWARDING WILL SAVE LIVES!
