"Students’ Council has approved in principle the creation of a new student-run service that meets the needs of racialized students on campus, pending a fee increase at the March General Meeting and a formal proposal submitted to Council for approval. " - FEDS
We as students and shareholders in the University of Waterloo choose to express our disapproval of a proposed fee increase for a "racialized students service". Our opposition to the fee increase is on the following grounds:
1. All students shouldn't have to bear a financial burden that will only benefit specific identity groups.
2. FEDS provides no evidence whatsoever for supposed "concerns raised last term from students with racialized lived experiences on campus."
3. There already exist several student resources (including the Equity Office and many identity based student clubs) which serve to bring attention and student support to issues of race, discrimination and inequality.
We ask that FEDS President Antonio Brieva, VP Internal Jill Knight, Chair of the Board Alexander Wray, Council Speaker Elizabeth O'Sullivan and the Federation of Students in general would please reconsider a fee increase and pursue avenues that wouldn't financially burden all students with a service that isn't in the entire university population's interest.
*Anybody who supports the right of the students of the University of Waterloo to refuse fee increases that are not beneficial or representative of ALL students can sign this petition.
