Retailers are not keeping copies of identification provided when applying for credit cards and lenders not requiring them to do so. They should require the applicants to provide verifiable phone number(s) and questions should be asked to further provide proof of identity.
Lenders are not required to perform due diligence when accepting credit applications to confirm identity of applicant. This negligence is contributory to identity theft and credit fraud.
