Australia's Federal Parliament (and many State Parliaments) open each day reciting the Lord's Prayer.

Australia is a secular society that recognises the importance of the separation of Church and State. S.116 of the Constitution provides:

The Commonwealth shall not make any law for establishing any religion, or for imposing any religious observance, or for prohibiting the free exercise of any religion, and no religious test shall be required as a qualification for any office or public trust under the Commonwealth.

In the 2016 Census, 30% of the population identified themselves as non-religious. Is it representative of our society to have religious prayer in our Parliament? It certainly does not represent the views of the atheists or the many non-Christian religions.

It is time for Christian prayer to be removed from Parliament.
