Offer women free access to midwifery continuity of care in early pregnancy

Women are not being informed of their options for pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. They are not offered continuity of care with a known midwife to guide and support them through this life-changing event. Evidence-based research has shown continuity of care with a known midwife improves the pregnancy and birth experience for women and reduces intervention - so why is this service not made available to ALL women? We need to change our approach to pregnancy care and prioritise choice for women in the early stages of pregnancy. With easy access to safe clinical care, education, advocacy and support throughout pregnancy and the 6-week postnatal period, women would feel more empowered and confident in their journey into parenthood. We believe pregnant women should be routinely offered access to community-based midwifery-led care throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period with a known midwife as an alternative to hospital-based maternity care. This service should be government-funded to ensure it is available to ALL women, regardless of socioeconomic status. This model of care has proven to be cost-effective and successful in its goals to improve experience and outcomes for women but is not sustainable without government funding. Please sign our petition to make this model of care an option for ALL women during pregnancy.
