TIV WOMEN IN DIASPORA started this petition to FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA and

We the Tiv Women In Diaspora (TWID) are calling on the Federal Government of Nigeria led by President Muhammadu Buhari to act now to ensure the safe return of more than a million Tiv internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in squalor in camps to their ancestral lands.

Nigeria is Africa's most populous nation, with over 200 million citizens. It is a multinational state in the Western part of the African continent that is inhabited by over 250 ethnic groups. Each of these groups has their own distinct language and culture and live in a total of 36 states. The Tiv ethnic group is the fourth largest of these groups. They are from: Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba and Plateau States in the Middle Belt region of the country. Tiv are a peace loving people whose main means of livelihood is cultivating their land and growing a substantial proportion of Nigeria's food.

For over a decade, our Tiv brothers and sisters have fled sustained violence and even murder at the hands of herdsmen. Their crops and properties have been completely destroyed by those whose cattle now freely graze on farmlands, while the victims languish in wretched destitution, barely surviving hellish conditions in deplorable makeshift camps dotted across four Nigerian states in the Middle Belt region. As the years go by, the conditions in these camps is worsening; they are extremely overcrowded without even the most basic amenities and healthcare facilities. These people have repeatedly expressed their desire to return to their farmlands as they are traditionally smallholder farmers, but their human rights continue to be violated. This results in the various issues they grapple with, (especially security) being severely neglected by the federal government of Nigeria.

TWID says enough is enough and the time has come for the Nigerian government to step up and act to provide a safe means of return to their lands for Tiv IDPs and to save lives that are being wasted and lost in this abominable manner.
