This crucial funding is needed to protect at risk and endangered species in our coastal regions.Last year, Ottawa cut back funding to the Ministries of Environment and Fisheries and Oceans, now those cuts are being felt by BC’s local orca whale populations, of which only 82 remain left in the wild. They are now on the endangered species list. The monitoring program Strait Watch, which operates on 300 K per year has now been canceled due to lack of funding while our neighbors to the south in Washington have just announced their 1.2 million dollar program to monitor their local orca populations. The averages of disturbance that orcas face in BC waters from non regulation compliant boaters during summer months alone is about 77 per day. Strait Watch spend 1600 + hours on the water trying to educate and deter boaters from doing so. Help restore this crucial service to BC's waters and protect this species for future generations. Who knows ? If nothing gets done we might only see orcas in aquariums in the near future.
