It is time to call on the Australian Government to hold the church accountable.
The recent figures of rampant child sex abuse and cover up in the Church that came out of the Royal Commission into Child Sex Abuse is but one of the reasons that it is time to cease diplomatic recognition of the Vatican.
Among other revelations, it was found that 7 percent of Catholic Priests had been accused of child sex crimes with a staggering total of 4,444 cases of abuse recorded between 1950 and 2009. The average age was around 10 years old.
During the investigations, the church hid behind the protections we have given them through diplomatic powers. The separation of church and state is the cornerstone of a successful and fair democracy.
It is time to eliminate the unfair privilege awarded to organisations responsible for abhorrent crimes against children and for putting their own interest before that of victims through.
End diplomatic recognition of the Vatican. Now.
