Joe R started this petition to Federal Government

Year after year, the first Sunday of February is marked by the NFL Super bowl. It is a tradition that extends beyond the scope of football and sports fans, to all people of the country, whether or not they watch football every week, or have never seen a game before in their life. People throw parties and invite over their friends, and a large percentage of the population take part in these events, staying up late to watch the game, drinking, eating, and enjoying the company of others.

Even if football is not of interest, the commercials provide entertainment for those friends of football fans, and both the quality of advertisement, and ad revenue reflects this. It generates the second most ad revenue, only behind the Olympics, which runs for several weeks, and does so in a single evening. And even for those who have no interest in football, and no interest in commercials, there is yet still those who watch only for the live musical performance during the Super Bowl halftime show.

For all of these people, who will no doubt be exhausted the next day, Monday following the Super Bowl brings much struggle, between getting up early for work, struggling to focus or think, and lack of motivation. Above all, motor vehicle accident rates soar between the hours after the Super Bowl, as people feel obligated to be home for the evening in order to be able to go to work the next day. These accidents can be contributed to not only drinking during the game, but also fatigue due to the late hour and distracted focus from results of the Super Bowl. In states in which the losing team resides, a study by the University of Toronto estimates crashes increase 68%, while the winning team rates increase 6%, and other states without a stake increase 46%. This is an unfortunate reality as a result of a national pastime.

Thus, this petition, to have the Monday following the Super Bowl designated a Federal Holiday. Without the pressing need to get up early in the morning, fans of both the winning team and the losing team, as well as those interested in the other aspects of the Super Bowl, will be less inclined to suffer through the fatigue, drinks, and mental distraction, and drive home after the end of the game. They will be able to relax among pleasant company, rest, and recover, before driving home well rested the next day. In addition, the Monday following the Super bowl will be left open, to allow workers to regain their focus before returning to work. This will lead to more productiveness, attentiveness, and a higher quality of work performed throughout the rest of the week. Please sign this petition to support the protection of the well-being of the people that take part in this storied American tradition year after year, and the impact this could have on the betterment of society.
