Dear Canadians, On April 1, 2020 it came to our attention that the City of Red Deer, AB was closing their Community Garden Plot program due to Covid-19 concerns. (RDNews.com) Upon further research we discovered that community garden closures due to Covid-19 concerns are occurring all across Canada. - Community plots in Langley Township BC (Mar 26, Aldergrove Star) - Community gardens in Montreal (CTV News) - Barrie Community Gardens , Barrie ON, (Barrie- Campbell River Community Gardens, Campbell River, BC (Mar 25 CampbellRivermirror.com) - Strathcona County Community Gardens, Strathcona County, AB (strathcona.ca) Why does this matter? According to Stats Canada 57% of our population grows some sort of food,(that includes community gardens), this works out to 21 million people out of a population of 37 million! How many Canadians will have there seasonal food supply affected by these community garden closures? The Federal Government has stated that garden centres and greenhouse are considered essential services so that people can access supplies to grow food. Community Gardens are many people’s only way to grow food. - Food security is especially important now in these uncertain times. The importance of growing food is paramount. The intent of this petition is to emphasize to both provincial and federal levels of government that Canadians are concerned about food security and the closures of community gardens across Canada. Thank You, Lana Gress and Maxwell Hislop
