As the entire country begins to shut down, people are now being isolated in their homes. As a consequence, they're using a lot more electricity than normal. According to Duke Energy Progress, higher electricity costs are during the on-peak period, which people are now forced to use due to living and working at home. Those who are now unemployed will discover that they can no longer afford to pay bills. Some energy companies have promised not to cancel electricity to homes that can no longer pay, but as soon as the pandemic is over they will become swamped with fees. Utility costs need to be significantly reduced or altogether eliminated during this pandemic in order for the American people to live sustainably. This is not a time for making profits, it's the time to come together as a country, just as we did in the face of so many other disasters, and give everyone a sense of security that is speedily disappearing.
