I am a student at Jefferson Township High School. I am currently taking a class called Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights and as our final project, the class is finding a social issue we are passionate about and becoming actively involved in it. I have chosen to do my final project on prison systems in the United States, and how they become a medium of systematic oppression for African Americans and other minorities. Biased drug laws contribute greatly to this oppression, as well as the rate of crime and cycle of poverty within inner cities nationwide. The thirteenth amendment to the constitution states that “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States”. The prison system is a form of enslavement for many people, and the percentage of minorities within these prisons is far above the percentage of other demographics.
