Save Cumberland Island From Rocket Launches

Save Cumberland Island From Rocket Launches
While people across the world have been celebrating victories in the field of commercial space transportation- companies like SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, and Blue Origin, for example, have made great progress in elevating humanity’s status to the stars. But, this commercial boom has created the need for more spaceports. Entrepreneuring companies and counties have capitalized on this boom- Camden County, Georgia, for example. Camden County is home to one of the most beautiful shorelines on the East Coast, the Cumberland Island National Seashore- which just so happens to be directly in the path of rocket launches from the planned Spaceport Camden site, only 3 miles away. Rocket launches have been known to disrupt fragile ecosystems, of which the CUIS has many. Fiery explosions from failed launches can potentially burn the entire island to a crisp, destroying habitats that have been used by birds, wild horses, and other species for thousands of years. Plus, the northern tip of the island, which is directly in the launch path, is home to one of the last remaining above ground settlements built by freed slaves after emancipation. Vibrations from launches can destroy these fragile buildings, tearing down one of the last traces of these settlements from view. We need to protect this island and all of the abundance on it from the planned Spaceport Camden.
