FDA: Stop Prescription Addiction and Harm; Ban Long-Term Prescriptions of Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepine drugs, like Valium, Ativan, Xanax, and Klonopin, are prescribed to millions of Americans to treat anxiety, depression, muscle aches and pains, insomnia, and other medical conditions. But long-term use of these drugs cause can cause anxiety, depression, addiction and several other serious health issues. The withdrawal from these medications can be life threatening and so emotionally and physically horrifying that people take their own lives. The FDA must act now to regulate long-term prescription of these drugs.
I started this petition because I was kept on a daily dose of Klonopin for 18 years by my doctor. I continued to decline in health. Not one doctor told me my ill health was due to the benzo I took as prescribed. When I finally became educated by reading about Klonopin on the Internet, I asked my doctor to help me get off of it. He was uneducated about benzo withdrawal and gave me very bad advice. I followed his bad advice and landed in the hospital.
It took 8 months to get drug free. Many of those months were spent in bed as I was too weak to stand up. The psychological horrors of withdrawal made life unbearable. I am now 2 1/2 years off the drug and still healing. I battle pain, fatigue, headaches, blurred vision, dizziness, fatigue, weakness and other symptoms on a daily basis. I started a benzo withdrawal blog (benzowithdrawalhelp.com) (http://www.benzowithdrawalhelp.com/) so others can be educated about withdrawal. I have lost six friends who gave up and committed suicide, as withdrawal was too horrific.
Thousands of people on benzos are struggling everyday. They must cope with the effect of tolerance to the drug. That means, the drug has damaged the GABA receptor causing tolerance withdrawal. The symptoms of tolerance range from IBS, heart problems, temporary blindness, weakness, panic attacks, anxiety or depression, weakness, fatigue, insomnia, and psychological problems that resemble schizophrenia or bi-polar and more. The doctor will usually increase the dosage, and the person will find that in time, the problems return and are often worse. Once you become tolerant to your dose, you are locked into a cycle of increasing doses and more ill health.
The U.K and Australia have stricter regulations on the duration of prescription of this group of drugs. It is time the FDA steps up to the plate and defends US citizens from the harm these drugs can cause while on them, tapering off them, and once off of them.
Please sign this petition and make a difference. Let's keep others from becoming addicted to these drugs and suffering through withdrawal.
