Like millions of Americans, I have trouble sleeping. I found a herb in 2012 through word of mouth at a local herb shop called Kava Kava and began taking it to help me sleep at night. I thought a more natural solution would be better than taking a drug like Ambien. I took it on and off for a year before I abruptly got very sick and jaundice.
On June 10, 2013, I was admitted to the hospital and then transferred to the liver transplant floor at Emory University Hospital. After extensive tests, it was determined that my liver was 90% dead tissue. I was told I was an excellent candidate for a liver transplant and went to the top of the list. At this point, I was within days of dying. At only 28 years old, I received my liver transplant on June 20, 2013. (This was the first time I'd been in the hospital since I was born.)
The underlying cause of my liver failure was the usage of the herb Kava Kava. Herbs such as Kava Kava are portrayed as safe because they are "natural," however, because they are not regulated by the FDA, there are no studies done on how they affect the human body or drugs that they may interact with. These herbs are easily accessible at your local Herb Shop, or even on Amazon.
I am making this my platform and resolution to ban the herb Kava Kava in the United States. Kava Kava is already banned in Canada, The U.K., and certain parts of Europe.
