Ally Baldassari started this petition to Superintendent of FCPS Scott Brabrand and
  • Our special education students have a federally-mandated right to an appropriate education which provides needed support in social skills and study skills.
  • Currently our middle school students' ONLY option to get services in social skills, study skills and life skills is to take year-long electives.  This takes away AT LEAST HALF (for one class) or ALL (if they are recommended two classes) of their given elective opportunities.
  • Elective classes provide the opportunity for choice in a school day, and for a student to participte in areas of their STRENGTHS.
  • These elective outlets can provide opportunity for success and joy that isn't otherwise found in their school day.
  • Our students are at greatly INCREASED RISK for DROP-OUT, SOCIAL ISOLATION, DEPRESSION, and SUICIDE.  They need joy, choice, success, and positive social interations around their hobbies and interests.
  • OUR STUDENTS SHOULD NOT BE FORCED TO GIVE UP THEIR ELECTIVES, A SOURCE OF CHOICE AND JOY THAT THEIR SCHOOL LIFE OTHERWISE TENDS TO LACK, JUST TO RECEIVE SERVICES THAT FEDERAL LAW SAYS ARE THEIR RIGHT.
