Students may struggle to find the money for a trip that costs over 300 dollars. Because of COVID-19 hundreds of students and their families lost above 300 dollars each due to the cancellation of spring trips and the lack of insurance for these trips. I recently lost almost 900 dollars on a trip that FCPS would not reimburse. This is equivalent to 3 trips to the grocery store.

We ask that FCPS create policy that forces schools to acquire insurance if the total cost of a trip is estimated to be over 300 dollars in planning. We recognize that COVID-19 is an extraordinary situation, but it is apparent that even if we weren’t affected by a global pandemic, students would still lose hundreds of dollars on trips due to cancellations. The price of insurance for a trip would typically cost less than the price of refunding every student for a trip above 300 dollars.
For example, my trip cost almost 900 dollars and about 50 students were attending the trip. This is an estimated 45,000 dollars that now has to be reimbursed to students and if multiple schools have a trip of similar price, the county now owes 100,000 dollars to students, not including all other trips that cost less and have varying amounts of students.

The goal of this petition is to not only influence FCPS policy, but to also provide reimbursement to families in this uncertain time.
