Bubbles Fishy started this petition to FCPS School Board

Beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, the Fairfax County Public Schools Board set into motion a cell phone ban effective in most FCPS schools. We, the students of FCPS, are calling for the removal of the cell phone ban and are asking for the board to take our opinions into consideration before creating rules and regulations that will affect our learning and efficiency at school. We believe that cell phones and other mobile devices are a tool at school that should not be banned, but should be used, according to certain policies, to help student thrive at school.

Mobile devices can be used in a variety of ways to help students learn at school. Many students have used their cell phones to complete homework during their extra work time, such as lunch and free periods, or to access class activities, such as Kahoot! and Quizlet Live. Additionally, students can also use their phones as a means to complete classwork and activities during the class if they have forgot their 1:1 FCPSOn Laptop. Students can also use their phones to listen to music during independent work time, which has been found to improve learning and memory. Finally, students can use their mobile devices to check for course updates in Google Classroom or Blackboard between class periods or when their computers are not accessible. This can prove useful when instructors have last minute instructions for students right before class time that they would not otherwise receive without their mobile device.

In conclusion, we are petitioning the FCPS Board to abolish the cell phone ban. Under the new cell phone regulations, instructors will still be able to take away students' mobile devices if they are being used irresponsibly, and students will be allowed to use their mobile devices in a similar way to their FCPSOn laptops. We believe that mobile devices can be a positive effect on the school environment if they are allowed to be used  reasonably.
